RAMP
Ceramics

RAMP-Standing for Roop and Al make pots, started up in 2001-2002 at Cockpit Arts, in South East London and then moved to Devon in 2005 in search of a larger studio. They make a range of functional decorative earthenware; fine elegant pieces are thrown on the wheel by Rupert and painted by Alice. Pots are thrown using a white earthenware clay, turned on the wheel, slip decorated and then inscribed with a drawing tool before bisque fired. Alice's decorative style is largely inspired by the natural world, which is abstracted into patterns created using specific brush strokes. Often layers of slip are built up tonally giving a sense of depth to the decoration. Inscribed lines and bold underglaze colours help to highlight shapes and pinpoint areas offering contrast to the softer slip colours. The aim is to produce pottery with a highly individual character that is both fresh and lively. Form, functionality and individual design are important elements of Rupert and Alice's work.
