Elizabeth Smith
Bone China Ceramics
Elizabeth graduated in ceramics, stone carving and sculpture at the University of Leicester and she has enjoyed a career lecturing in ceramics, art and theatre design. She uses white bone china clay to make bold elegant forms complemented by sensuous burnished and textured surfaces that explore pattern and light. Using her own pattern and texture stamps, Elizabeth radically transforms the thinly rolled or thrown clay into richly decorated surfaces. She searches for ways in which the form, function and patterns of the work might enhance the translucent qualities of the fired clay. Elizabeth has lived, worked and travelled in the Middle East and much of her inspiration is the pattern and order of the Islamic architecture, arts and crafts. Her work is in private collections around the world. She is a member of the Devon Guild of Craftsmen and has shown in exhibitions in London and the Southwest.
