JENNY SOUTHAM
Sculptor
Jenny Southam gained a fine art degree in 1984 at Bristol Polytechnic
and a post- graduate in bronze sculpture. Moving to Exeter, she taught
Art for some years. Since 1989 Jenny has worked exclusively with clay
and in particular, terracotta. The sculptures explore mythical and domestic
themes. They are celebratory, though in a quiet and contemplative way.
The oxides and slips decorating the pieces are used in an intuitive manner
to echo its emotional rhythms. Each sculpture is a one-off, but Jenny
will return to rework certain subjects and themes. Her influences include
ancient Etruscan sculptures and Staffordshire mantelpiece figures.
