Alison Mitchinson - 'Red Earth Arts'

Alison is a ceramic artist living in mid Devon. She studied at Plymouth College of Art and Design and has recently returned to ceramics after a long break.

Alison’s work is mostly figurative and is hand built from earthenware clay. It comes out of a lifelong interest in myth and folklore and a strong connection to the natural world.

The Bird People series emerged after a sunny springtime spent watching the bustling activity of birds in the garden outside her workshop (with occasional brief flights inside the room.)

Allan Morgan

Allan Morgan is a highly regarded British landscape artist known for his captivating depictions of natural scenes. Born in 1952, Morgan studied Fine Art at Swansea and Coventry Art Colleges, which laid the foundation for his artistic career. Early in his professional life, he worked as an illustrator for major British publishing companies, but his passion for landscape painting soon took over, and he transitioned to a full-time artist. His works are heavily influenced by his love for light, colour, and the natural atmosphere of the British countryside.

Morgan's landscapes often feature a balance between realism and a more "colourist" approach, with his later works embracing vivid and expressive use of colour.

Having spent time living near the coast, he regularly returns to coastal and rural themes in his paintings, finding inspiration in the sweeping skies and rolling hills of the Welsh countryside and other locations like the Gower Peninsula. His attention to detail and keen sense of atmosphere make his paintings both tranquil and evocative.

Over the years, Morgan's style has evolved, but his commitment to capturing the beauty of nature remains constant. His compositions often emphasise the interplay between light and the landscape, creating dynamic and atmospheric pieces that resonate with collectors. His works are sought after across the UK and Europe, with exhibitions in prominent galleries adding to his growing reputation.

Now based in the border region of Herefordshire and Powys, Allan Morgan continues to draw from his surroundings, producing artwork that speaks to the serenity and grandeur of the natural world. His landscape paintings not only capture the physical beauty of the scenes but also evoke an emotional response

Aly Murray

A love of dramatic skies, seas and the play of light provides inspiration for Aly Murray's expansive landscapes. Her careful painting involves rich colours and shapes and considered detailing. Usually painting in larger formats in acrylic, Aly paints mostly from photographs taken during coastal and country walks.

Based in mid Devon, with frequent trips to the surrounding coast, Aly aims to project the wonders of her unspoilt surroundings through her painting.

Aly hasn't taken a traditional route to painting. With a degree in French & German followed by a career in marketing with major brands, she has spent the last 2 decades running an online business. She is also a self taught graphic designer and dabbles in garden design, cooking and triathlon.

Amanda Bee

Amanda’s abstracted landscape paintings seek to explore the spirit, features and qualities of the places we call home. She paints landscapes she knows well creating remembered experiences, fragments of time, sounds, colour, movement. A recreation of place which is deeply personal.

Amanda is interested in the areas that pull us back, the places we visit over and over and never tire of. The landscapes we carry with us, which hold our memories and fill us with joy. For her these are specific places in her home County of Somerset and nearby Wiltshire, the wildlife marshes around Gibraltar Point in Lincolnshire, the coast and wild spaces of Cornwall and the beautiful rural landscapes of Italy.

Amanda works with paint and collage creating mixed media pieces full of colour, bold, sensitive, emotional responses to landscapes forever changing and marked by the human hand, nature and time.

Annie Waring

'I studied printed textile design at Middlesex Polytechnic in the early 80’s. When I graduated I began to design and hand paint my own ranges of bone china tableware. Then I worked under my maiden name of Doherty. I sold my work in Liberty and Thomas Goode in London, Henri Bendel in New York and as far away as Japan. I also designed exclusive ranges for Marks and Spencer among others.

More recently I have returned to painting, the root of all my design work, and now concentrate predominantly on still life. I work in oils and occasionally watercolour. I like to paint simple objects from my home and strive to capture their essence. I am particularly interested in light and reflection and naturally ceramics feature heavily in my compositions.

Anne de Geus

Born in London in 1934, Anne studied Fine Art at Bromley Art School and then took a teacher’s diploma at Brighton College of Art. She now lives and works in Somerset.

“The countryside has been a great influence on my paintings, which are often landscape. I find the contrast of man-made shapes and natural forms exciting, and continually adjust colour and shape trying to capture the essence of my surroundings. My paintings are not abstract, but they are abstracted from the subject. They are based on reality, but they are not portraits of places. There is no hidden message, no social or political statement in my work; just ‘look and see how I feel about where I live’. If the viewer recognises and enjoys something of this, then that is a real bonus.”

Anna Wright

Anna is an artist and illustrator.  Her upbringing in Dumfries and Galloway, southwest Scotland was surrounded by rural life, which alongside her love for colour, pattern and textiles has shaped her work.

Since exploring these influences at Edinburgh College of Art, Anna has grown her trademark style of colour and humour using a mixture of fabric, feathers, pen, ink & paint. On any given day you'll find her in her studio sketching away or delving into her chest of fabric that she has sourced from varied locations. Animals are her main focus and she uses bold inky lines to capture their humour and character adding fabric & feathers to bring colour & texture to her drawings. If the mood is right the images are signed off with a witty caption adding to the joy of the creation.

Anna now works from her studio, back home where she grew up. Her work has been featured in House and Garden, Country Life and Artists & Illustrators.

Cameron Main

'Stories drive me—each mark I make carries its own narrative, a hidden backstory that comes to life as ink meets paper. Early on, I wrestled with labels: “What kind of artist am I?” Eventually, I realized that pinning myself down was futile. I am, simply, a “creative.”

Every drawing I create is born with a personality of its own. As I sketch and scribble, my thoughts flow through the pen and onto the surface, leaving behind traces of character—yet always inviting you to fill in the gaps with your own imagination. And though this body of work reflects who I was in that moment, it’s only a snapshot of what’s to come. I’m already exploring new ideas and directions, fascinated by the possibilities that lie beyond.

During my studies in America, the celebrated artist Julian Stanzak shared a nugget of wisdom I carry into every project: you, the artist, retain 95% ownership of your work; the remaining 5% belongs to someone else—their perspective, their love or critique, their story. That balance guides me as I build each piece, asking: what’s the best use of my 95%?

Beyond illustration, I wear many hats—I’m an entrepreneur, designer, comedy writer, and illustrator. Here in this gallery, you’ll find the intersection of those worlds, where narrative and creativity collide. Welcome to my story; I can’t wait to see how you continue it.'

Cameron trained at Edinburgh College of Art and Cleveland Institute of Art Ohio.

Carol Saunderson

‘I am never happier than when I am either walking in the landscape or painting it.

I grew up in East Anglia as a member of a farming family, and the love of the natural world that I developed as a child has grown stronger in me as the years have passed.

My paintings are not usually direct representations of a scene; they are mostly semi-abstract works that I use as a way of recording the aspect that remains uppermost in my memory. They evoke the sensation of a moment in time in a particular location. For me, they are more 'real' than a photograph.

I walk each day in the countryside around the Suffolk village in which I live. The familiar fields, woods, paths, animals and birds find their way into the work. I watch the light move across the landscape or through the trees, continually changing the colours and the atmosphere.

I am fortunate enough to have been working as an artist for more than twenty-five years. I exhibit at galleries around the UK and also undertake private commissions. My work has been published as both prints and greetings cards and has appeared in magazines.’

Catherine Bowdler

‘I studied at Bournville College of Art and have a degree in Printed Textiles from Loughborough College of Art and Design and a P.G.C.E in Art and Design.

With a background in printed textiles I love pattern, composition and colour. I now mostly create affordable works on paper in low editions that compliment both modern and traditional interiors.

I collect mid century vintage fabrics and this period of design has long been a reference point, but my primary inspiration is the composition and ingenuity of Japanese textiles, although I'm easily inspired by the world around me if I see colours and patterns I like. This year I turned my teeny tiny laundry into a dark room for exposing screens and I happily print 1950s English Rose kitchen.’

What is a screen print? (sometimes called a silkscreen print)

Screen printing is a process in which ink is forced onto paper through a fine mesh screen stretched around a wooden or metal frame, by pulling a rubber squeegee across it. Each colour is printed one layer at a time, in a predetermined order to achieve different effects.

The design for each colour is put onto a screen by a process of applying a thin layer of light sensitive emulsion, followed by exposure to UV light in a dark room. Areas of the emulsion covered by black remain unaffected by exposure to light. The rest of the emulsion will harden on the mesh. The unaffected areas can then be washed away leaving a design stencil in the screen through which ink can be forced to print onto the paper underneath. A separate screen is made for each colour. Colours are printed individually and left to dry before applying the next layer. A different type of print bed is used to print on paper or textiles, and different types of dyes and inks are used.

Debbie Lush

Debbie began working life as a professional Illustrator after studying at Harrow School of Art and then at The Royal College of Art. After 15 years she left London in 2003 to renovate a country pub in Somerset with the intention of painting the landscape she loved. However, running a pub left little time to paint! It was 13 years and a further move to Devon before she fulfilled her ambition to paint full time. Returning to painting after an extended break gave Debbie a fresh perspective on her art, resulting in renewed excitement and fascination.

Debbie’s paintings are assembled from the landscapes she encounters on her walks with her dog in Devon. Her joy in the simple process of painting, the act of brushing blobs of varying thickness paints on a surface, one over the other, shines through in her pieces. She makes fantastic use of vivid colour organised around points of interest, usually the details of her muddy treks on coastal footpaths. Trees, gates, vertiginous rolling fields, white painted houses and farm animals all feature.

Debbie’s work offers a fresh and enthralling take on the Devon countryside which is thoroughly contemporary and endlessly engaging.

Dee Nickerson

Dee Nickerson was born in South Norfolk in 1957. From quite an early age she found excitement, challenge and escapism in making art. Influenced by among others, Munnings and Hockney she soon decided she really wanted to be an artist.

Dee has gathered a huge following, with many admirers and collectors of her paintings drawn to her gentle observation of the natural world around her remote home in Suffolk. Her paintings are informed by her deep understanding of everyday country life through the changing seasons. By taking these references, Dee combines memories past and present along with a lifelong love of fashion and textile design to create pictorial stories that lead the observer into a tranquil world.

Lantic is delighted to be showing five framed limited edition signed giclee prints.

Delphine Jones

Delphine Jones is an Exeter based printmaker. She graduated in Graphic Design and Illustration at Exeter College of Art and Design and is a member of the Society of Industrial Artists and Designers. She has worked as a senior graphic designer in the education sector for over 25 years. Delphine is passionate about all aspects of printmaking and is a member of Double Elephant, a fine art printmaking studio, based in Exeter.

Delphine draws upon the natural world for inspiration, documenting the landscape through screen printing. Her limited edition prints are largely created with line and texture. By abstracting and refining her initial observations, her working process begins with a series of sketches, rubbings and photographic references taken from the Devon landscape. At her Exeter studio she then abstracts the scene redrawing the image using the textures and colours that she has referenced from the landscape. This creates a unique vibrancy and contemporary approach to her printmaking.

Gillian McCormick Glass

Coloured glass was used for art and decoration in the ancient world by both Egyptians and Romans – and the techniques and materials used in making stained glass windows have changed little since the Middle Ages. Dorset artist Gillian McCormick’s love of the craft was born out of an interest in medieval art. The atmosphere, mystery and otherworldliness of the stained glass she saw in the cathedrals of St Mary’s and St Giles while studying painting at Edinburgh’s College of Art encouraged her to learn more. The essential tools – a glass cutter, grozing pliers for breaking and shaping the glass and a soldering iron – weren’t hard to collect, and Gillian started her stained glass journey by following her initial art degree with decorative glass courses in Bath and Glasgow, learning the skills of painting, staining, acid etching and fusing.

Gillian makes individual fused glass birds that are set in either a square oak wood base or natural log base.
Made by cutting out individual pieces and painting them before assembling on the base glass, with copper leg inserts. Once fired in the kiln to a temperature of 800 degrees centigrade, the little bird is mounted on to the wooden base ready to be displayed on a window sill or shelf.
They look particularly at home amongst house plants. Each bird is individually made so there are always variations, which is half the charm

Jack Welbourne

Currently based in his Cardiff studio, Jack Welbourne gained experience both in the UK and Sweden whilst honing his skills in gas-fired, hand-thrown pottery. Inspired by traditional techniques and values, each functional piece is elevated by contemporary designs and mark marking in-keeping with the style of mid-century studio pottery. Working with locally sourced materials such as clay and wood ash he aims to capture a more earthen and elemental feel, allowing you to bring into your home a ‘living work of art’ which excites you with every use.

Jackie Reynolds

‘Bright, colourful and uplifting artwork inspired by my love of flowers, flower gardens, meadows, Devon countryside and nature. I have a huge passion for bright colours and colour combinations that create a sense of happiness, warmth and joy.

One of my earliest childhood memories is standing at an easel painting at play school, aged 3 or 4. My love of painting has never left me.

I mostly create on canvas, board or paper artworks filled with beautiful colours, abstract florals, sometimes landscapes and seascapes...wherever my mind needs me to be. I gather a great deal of fulfillment from painting and more besides, when my work is chosen to hang in someone's home.

John Maltby

Lantic Gallery is delighted to be showing a large collection of rare early work by John Maltby (1936 - 2020) . The majority of the collection is being sold on behalf of a private collector from Scotland who bought the pieces directly from John at Stoneshill Pottery in the 1970s and 1980s.

The collection includes a tea bowl, a trophy piece, a posey pot, two very collectable automatas - one with decorated figures and mirror as well as several exquisite little lidded pots not often seen on the market. There are also two later scupltures for sale including 'The Guardian' made the year John died showing the span of his work.

Lantic Gallery has been privileged to exhibit the work of John Maltby from 2004 until his passing in 2020 aged 84. John was a prolific maker whose work was inspired by English landscape, the sea, architecture and music. His work is represented in both public and private collections worldwide, including The Victoria & Albert Museum - London, The Museum Für Kunstegewerbe - Hamburg and The Royal Scottish Museum- Edinburgh. He was a Fellow of the Craft Potters Association and is recognised today as one of Britain’s finest ceramic artists.

John Maltby’s distinctive style is loved and appreciated by many who favour a different take on life. His strong themes are mostly figurative, taken from ancient cultures and historical figures, myths and legends, but informed by modern society and current affairs. The use of symbolic animals and creatures can be interpreted as statements of the artist’s view of the world in which we live now, but the interpretation is left entirely to the viewer.

Maltby was born in Lincolnshire in 1936 and studied sculpture at Leicester and at Goldsmith's College, London. John went on to teach painting for two and a half years before working with David Leach at Bovey Tracey, whose imagination and philosophy made a profound impression. In 1964 John set up his own workshop in Devon. Having trained with Leach in the Anglo-Oriental tradition he realized on reflection that he had little identification and interest with the great ceramic traditions of China, Japan and the East and was more familiar and excited by Western Artists - Picasso, Klee, Moore & Nicholson and the primitive Wallis. His work went through several distinct stylistic periods taking him away from functional pots towards the making of more individual sculptural pieces.

Katarzyna Klein

‘I paint distant views of a landscape peppered with buildings. Water or valleys may divide the dwellings yet they are all connected by the echoing shapes and restful hues of my palette. A foreground detailed with wild flowers accentuates the perspective planes and graphic lines suggest paths and boundaries.

My Polish heritage surfaces in my work; my naive, pattern-based painting evolving from the folk art tradition. A recent exploration of the homelands of my family has inspired my latest body of work. Tracing the steps of my forebears I saw the simple wooden houses, once brightly coloured and decorated and heard stories of wolves and forests, the winter freeze and storks in Spring. These visual images now enrich my simple and almost fairy-tale landscapes.

I studied at St. Martin's School of Art in London and received a travel bursary to study Fine Art at the Warsaw Academy of Arts in Poland. I have worked as a graphic designer, illustrator, textile designer and FE tutor. My clients have included M&S, The Observer Magazine, Harvey Nichols, The Sunday Times, Usborne Publishing, the BBC, Liberty and Macy's.’

Kate Aggett SWAC

Kate was born in Truro, Cornwall in 1970 into a family of Artists. After completing an Art foundation course in Plymouth in 1989, she went on to graduate from Bristol Polytechnic in 1992 with a BA Honours Degree in Fashion/Textiles design. Since then she has developed and flourished creatively as an artist, moving on from her beginnings as a knitwear and textile designer to her current position as a fine artist. Working from photographs, sketches and memory she creates beautiful images based on scenes from the Devon and Cornwall coastline. She has an abiding passion for colour, fabric and texture, which is key to her unique collages. She uses handmade paper, card, pastel papers, cotton, denim and silks, all hand cut, torn, frayed, shredded and burnt to create an image executed with great dexterity and precision. Other ingredients found within the pictures are often sourced and collected on walks in and around the actual location such as lichen, bark, leaves and feathers. Using these organic materials give an authentic quality to her work. ‘The excitement of finding new materials is immense. If you look closely and study a leaf or a piece of bark it becomes so many other things, a rugged cliff, tree or a ploughed field for example. The colours, lines and textures are already there. The ordinary becomes the extraordinary’. It is this innovative approach, attention to detail and the intricate application of the materials that make her work so unusual and exclusive. Kate has fulfilled numerous commissions, has had work exhibited at various exhibitions and galleries throughout the southwest and has produced originals for the DeMontfort Fine Art Whitewall galleries which are nationwide. She was elected as an academician at the South West Academy of Fine and Applied Arts in march 2013 and became one of their Trustees in 2015.

Kelly Stevens-McLaughlan

‘My name is Kelly and I live with two big dogs and my husband, in rural North West Devon.

I've been creative all of my life, but until I was 46 it was all done on a 'hobby' basis as I followed a career in other directions. But then one day I decided that it was time to change that and to focus on my love of painting and drawing. Things took off very quickly!

Since that time I have produced thousands of artworks and have built an international business. My art is collected around the world and features in many amazing homes from fabulous Scottish castles to ultra modern Malibu beach houses. I'm lucky to have worked with many of the worlds top interior designers, and have also supplied artworks to film and TV studios, museums, hotels and other wonderful venues around the world. My clients are really very varied!

I've had the privilege of living with many animals during my lifetime and have learned to appreciate all of their unique personalities and funny little quirks, and it's this that mainly inspires my artwork. But whilst most of my artwork is focused on animals, I also have a love of the sea and the natural world around us, and so I have also created many artworks that are botanical or ocean focused.

I work in two mediums; acrylics on canvas and also digitally. Sometimes I use collage techniques as well.

But I dont just paint pictures, I'm also a homeware designer and have created a large range of luxury cushions and very fabulous lampshades, that feature some of my most beautiful designs.

I'm more known in the US where I work under the trade name FabFunky and where we are stocked in around 500 boutiques and shops across every state.’

Despite her success in diverse mediums, Kelly's true love lies in painting with acrylics. In her studio she enjoys working with large canvases to produce vibrant, expressive paintings that capture the essence of her natural surroundings in North Devon. We are so thrilled to be showing a collection of Kelly’s original paintings at Lantic.

'Flash through the Ferns' - £950
'Flash through the Ferns' - £950

Original Acrylic on Canvas Board. Framed in white frame. Image size - 60cm x 75cm. Framed size - 92cm x 77cm

‘No one sees the fox arrive. That’s not how this fox works.

One moment the garden is still with leaves holding their breath, colour settling into place. And the next there’s movement, a warm streak of copper slipping through the ferns like a thought that won’t stay put.

The fox does not pause to explain itself. It moves because movement feels right. Because there are places to be, even if they can’t quite be named. Some paths only exist while you’re running them.

Flowers brush against fur. Leaves bend and spring back. The garden barely has time to notice what’s passed through it, only that something has shifted, light has rearranged, air stirred, silence changed shape.

Those who catch a glimpse of the fox are never quite sure what they saw. Just colour. Just motion. Just a sudden sense that something beautiful doesn’t always stay long enough to be understood. The fox knows this already.

It runs not to escape, but to remain true to itself - untethered, instinctive, impossible to pin down. Stillness belongs elsewhere. This fox belongs to the in-between moments. The almost-there. The just-missed. And then it’s gone.

Leaving only the ferns swaying gently, and the quiet feeling that something wonderful passed through, quickly, deliberately, and exactly when it meant to.’

'An Old Agreement' - £1,100

Original Acrylic on Canvas Board. Framed in white frame. Image size - 60cm x 75cm. Framed size - 92cm x 77cm

‘Long before the paths were named, before the land learned who should hunt and who should hide, an agreement was made.

No one remembers the words of it now, only the shape it took.

A fox and a hare sit back to back in a clearing washed pale with light. They face different horizons, alert to different things, each keeping watch in their own way. Between them there is no fear, no challenge, no need to explain. Just trust, settled and unspoken.

Some say the agreement was born of necessity. Others believe it came from understanding. The quiet recognition that not all strength looks the same, and that survival is sometimes a shared act.  Whatever its origin, it has endured. The gold flecks in the air are said to mark the places where it still holds.

Those who stumble upon them feel it instinctively: the calm of being held in balance, the reassurance of not having to face everything alone.  The fox watches the distance. The hare listens for what comes close. And together, without ever turning, they keep the world steady.’

'The Fox who Waits' - £895
'The Fox who Waits' - £895

Original Acrylic on Canvas. Framed in white tray frame. Canvas size - 70cm x 70cm. Framed size - 74cm x 74cm

‘The fox is not lost.  ‘It has never been lost. It stands at the meeting place between moments, where what has been and what is still to come briefly touch. The garden gathers itself around the fox, leaves and colour leaning inward as if they, too, are listening. Waiting is the fox’s work.

It waits for shifts too small to name. For choices not yet made.  For the moment when something quietly finds its way back to itself.

The fox does not chase answers. It understands that some things must arrive on their own, and that rushing them only drives them further away. Instead, it holds the space.  It stays. It remembers.

There are those who pass nearby and feel an unexpected pull.  A slowing in the chest, a soft ache they can’t quite explain. They may not notice the fox at first, but something in them recognises it. A sense that not all journeys require movement. That sometimes the bravest thing is to remain present when everything else urges escape. The fox knows this feeling well.  It has carried it for a long time.

It waits for the lost to realise they are not broken.
For the weary to understand they are not behind.
For the quiet ones to see that stillness can be a direction.

And when that understanding finally settles, when it lands gently, without drama, the fox will still be there.  Watching, holding, waiting.’

‘In the shadowed hush between day’s end and night’s hush, Twilight Bloom stands watch among the tall flowers, where the blue tulips nod in quiet reverence.  Her body is formed of blushing petals, each one said to hold the memory of a wish made in secret.
The ground beneath her stirs gently with dark pink blossoms that only open when no one’s looking.

It’s whispered that she appears in meadows forgotten by time; gardens that bloom once a year, for one hour only, when the sky turns the colour of old parchment and distant embers.

Follow her if you dare, but know this: she walks the line between the seen and the almost-remembered.’

'Petalbound' - £750
'Petalbound' - £750

Original Acrylic on Canvas. Framed in white tray frame. Canvas size - 70cm x 70cm. Framed size - 74cm x 74cm

They say the hare called Petalbound was not born but woven; stitched together by the wind and the meadow itself on the first day of spring.

‘His body, a tapestry of fallen petals, grass-whispers, and morning light, was created to carry messages between seasons. Each step he took scattered the blooms of last spring and sowed the seeds of the next. The blue flowers tucked gently in his ears were said to help him hear the sighs of sleeping roots, and the rustle of distant storms yet to come.

It is said that if you see him just before the turn of the equinox, time will slow, and for a breath or two, you might remember every spring that ever lived in your bones. But you mustn’t follow him as Petalbound always runs toward what has not yet happened.’

Original Acrylic on Canvas. Framed in white tray frame. Canvas size - 90cm x 90cm. Framed size - 94cm x 94cm

‘He burst through the meadow as though he had dreamed it into being;  a fox not skulking nor hunting, but soaring, bounding, laughing.  His fur shimmered with colour: ribbons of ochre and crimson, saffron and rust, all caught in a glorious swirl.

Around him, tall white blooms swayed like spectators at a parade.  Spindly flowerheads bowed under the weight of tiny buds, and down at his feet, velvet pansies turned their faces upward like children, wide-eyed with delight, and everywhere he touched seemed to bloom just a little brighter.

There was no chase, no need, no destination.  Just the exuberance of being alive in a world that was bursting with colour and scent.  His joy wasn’t hidden, it was written across the curve of his back, the lift of his paws, the way his ears flicked forward into the breeze as if to greet it like an old friend.

He didn’t just run through the flowers.

He was part of them.

A fox in full celebration of himself.

A wild and wonderful burst of Meadowjoy’.

'Hare of the Luminous Vale' - £1,200 SOLD

Original Acrylic on Canvas. Framed in white tray frame. Canvas size - 90cm x 90cm. Framed size - 94cm x 94cm

‘There is a quiet valley known only to the wind and the moon, a place that appears only when the world forgets to rush. Here, in the hush of night, the flowers grow tall, reaching upward as if trying to listen to the stars. Their petals and leaves are small but radiant - golden, rose, and turquoise like brushstrokes against the darkness.  And at the centre of this shimmering stillness, sits the hare.

She is not just passing through. She belongs to the vale, or perhaps it belongs to her.  Her fur is not of ordinary thread, but stitched from curling leaves in shades of sea-green and dusk-blue, patterned with fragments of forgotten petals. Turquoise light clings to her like a secret, while gold flecks flicker across her shoulders, like pollen in moonlight or dreams taking root.

Beneath her feet bloom two great blossoms - pink, gold, and opalescent - like guardians or anchors, tethering her gently to the earth.  Around her rise the slender stems of tall golden flowers, quiet sentinels in a garden that never sleeps. They bend slightly in the breeze that doesn't quite exist, and the hare doesn’t move.  She watches.  She waits.  Perhaps for nothing.  Perhaps for everything.

Some say the vale is a resting place for thoughts too delicate for daylight.  Others say it’s a place where creatures go when they remember who they truly are.  And the hare?  She is both muse and memory, half shadow, half bloom.  A guardian of the in-between, glowing softly in the hour when all things begin to blur: leaf and fur, night and gold, dream and waking.’

‘In the quiet places of the world, where wildflowers grow taller than a hare’s ears and the sky stretches wide and endless, lives a creature known as Pathfinder.

Her fur is threaded with bright, ever-shifting ribbons of colour, not born of paint or dye, but spun from the very paths she’s taken. Each ribbon tells a story: a journey through mist, a moonlit discovery, a moment of courage, a whispered secret passed through leaves. They wind and shimmer through her coat like living memory, never fading, always moving.

It is said that if you’re lost, not just in the woods, but in your life or thoughts, and you catch a glimpse of Pathfinder weaving through the stems and blossoms, you will soon find your way. She does not leave footprints, only a sudden certainty in your step, and a strand of bright colour caught on a thorn or a petal.

No one follows her trail, for no two are ever the same. She does not return the way she came. But she reminds us: there is always a way through, and beauty along the path.’

‘In the hush of the turning year, when summer's last breath hangs golden in the trees, the Emberwatch Hare appears.

They say he rises only once each season’s end, from beneath the red-leafed bracken where fire meets soil. His fur burns with the colours of fading blooms—russet, crimson, and flame—and wherever he treads, the plants turn to shades of sunset, as if answering an ancient call.

The golden leaves that arc above him are said to be his canopy, ever following, ever sheltering. Some believe he keeps time for the wild world, marking the moment when light begins to lean toward winter. Others say he waits—listening for a wind that signals change.

Silent, steady, and watchful, he is the keeper of endings that bloom quietly into new beginnings.’

'Meadow Muse' -SOLD

Original Acrylic on Canvas. Framed in white tray frame. Canvas size - 60cm x 60cm. Framed size - 65cm x 65cm - £590

In the hush of the deepest hour of night, when the stars lean low and the breeze stills to listen, the Meadow Muse stirs. She is not just a hare, but a keeper of dreams and old floral wisdom. A creature woven from twilight and the memory of blooms long faded.

It’s said she appears only in wildflower fields untouched by time, where the petals whisper forgotten tongues and the pollen hangs like stardust in the air. The flowers around her bend slightly in her presence, as though paying homage. She does not speak, but her silence hums with ancient melodies - lullabies of the soil, the roots, and the moon.

Those who see her often wake with paint on their fingers, poems in their heads, or music in their ears; touched, however briefly, by her quiet enchantment. For the Meadow Muse does not visit by chance; she chooses the ones most in need of inspiration and leaves behind only a drift of white petals and a feeling of sudden clarity.

'The Florist Fox' SOLD
'The Florist Fox' SOLD

Original Acrylic on Canvas. Framed in a pale green tray frame. Canvas size - 41 cm x 61cm. Framed size - 49.5cm x 64.5cm - £750

‘Beyond the iron gates of an ancient garden, where ivy curled over forgotten pathways, there lived a fox known only as the Florist.

Clad in a well-tailored coat and a waistcoat brushed with the hues of autumn, he moved through the tangled greenery with quiet purpose. Upon his head sat a weathered top hat, from its brim delicate flowers bloomed in perpetual splendour, their petals swaying as if caught in an unseen breeze.

The Florist understood the language of roots and leaves, the silent wishes of blossoms yet to bloom. Wherever he walked, the garden responded, vines bending toward his touch, petals unfurling in his shadow.

Some whispered that he had never been born at all, but instead stepped from the pages of an old botanical sketch, a creature conjured by ink, imagination, and the wild, unbroken spirit of nature itself.’

Original Acrylic on Canvas. Framed in a pale green tray frame. Canvas size - 41 cm x 61cm. Framed size - 49.5cm x 64.5cm - £750

‘In the same overgrown garden where the Florist walks, another fox moves with quieter purpose. Her coat is the soft green of moss in shade, and from the brim of her worn velvet hat blooms a single peach-toned rose, curled as if listening.

They call her the Green - Hatted Fox. She does not summon blossoms like her companion, but listens for the ones that bloom in secret. Where he stirs colour into life, she follows the hidden pulse beneath leaf and root.

Some say she arrived with the first frost, others that she was always there, just waiting to be seen. The garden knows her. Stones warm where she steps. Forgotten seeds remember their names.

At dusk, she and the Florist often walk together - no words, no hurry, just the soft hush of petals opening in their wake.’

'Rosebrim' - SOLD

Original Acrylic on Canvas. Framed in white tray frame. Canvas size - 60cm x 60cm. Framed size - 64cm x 64cm - £590

‘When the autumn winds sigh their last and the winter hesitates at the threshold, there comes a strange and fleeting season - the time of the Pink Fall.

In hidden glades where the sun still lingers, the trees do not shed their leaves in gold or rust, but in a flush of vivid pink, as if the earth itself has blushed at the change.

It is in this world of fleeting colour that Rosebrim appears. His paws tread softly upon the bright leaves, his fur touched with the same warmth of the fading sun.

They say he is the keeper of the in-between, a wanderer of seasons who never stays too long in any one world.

Those who catch a glimpse of him know they are standing at the edge of something rare - a moment where autumn and spring reach for one another, and time itself takes a breath before the frost settles in.’

‘When the sky blushes with the deep pink of a waking dawn, the meadow stirs with whispered stories. It is said that in the fleeting moments before the sun crests the horizon, the Dawnshadow hare appears; a creature woven from the night’s last breath and the day’s first light. Her fur blooms with flowers that drank from the stars, their petals glowing softly as they cling to her like embers of the fading dark.

The old ones tell that she is neither bound to the night nor the day, but belongs to the edge of both. She moves silently through the meadow, the golden and pink blossoms at her feet leaning toward her passing like old friends. The sky follows her, deepening and softening, as though reluctant to lose its final touch of darkness.

To see the Dawnshadow hare is a rare blessing. They say her presence promises a day of gentle skies and golden light, though she never lingers. For just as the sun rises, she vanishes into the brightening world, leaving only the memory of the stormy pink sky and the wildflowers that dared to bloom in the shadows.’

Original Acrylic on Canvas. Framed in a pale green tray frame. Canvas size - 41 cm x 61cm. Framed size - 49.5cm x 64.5cm - £750

‘In the Quiet corners of Devon’s ancient woodlands, where moss carpets the earth and wildflowers bloom unseen, there is a legend of a most curious fox.

Unlike his kin, who thrived on cunning and chase, this fox was drawn not to the hunt, but to the mysteries of the green world.

Clad in a fine waistcoat and jacket, he wandered the forests with a leather-bound journal, sketching each leaf and bloom with meticulous care.

Some say he could speak the language of plants, whispering ferns and coaxing secrets from ivy-clad ruins. Others believe he was once a Victorian botanist who, lost in his studies, was transformed by the magic of the land.

But whether fox or man, his work remains - pressed flowers found in forgotten books, their names inked in elegant, untamed script.’

'Hollowshade Hare' - SOLD
'Hollowshade Hare' - SOLD

Original Acrylic on Canvas. Framed in white tray frame. Canvas size - 90cm x 90cm. Framed size - 94cm x 94cm - £1,200

Deep within the tangled heart of the old wood, where the trees whisper in voices long forgotten, the Hollowshade Hare watches with knowing eyes. Its fur, woven from autumn’s final leaves and spring’s first buds, shifts with the turning of the seasons, never quite the same twice. Some say it is not merely a hare, but the spirit of the wood itself - a keeper of paths that no longer exist on any map.

Travellers who stray too far into the undergrowth sometimes catch a glimpse of it, a flicker of warm gold against the deep blue hush of dusk. If they follow, the world around them seems to change. Familiar trails twist into stange new routes, and the wind carries echoes of voices they almost remember. The Hollowshade Hare never lingers , but those who tread in its wake often find themeselves standing somwhere unexpected. Somewhere they never meant to go, yet exactly where they were always meant to be.

'Bramblekin' SOLD
'Bramblekin' SOLD

Original Acrylic on Canvas. Framed in white tray frame. Canvas size - 90cm x 90cm. Framed size - 94cm x 94cm - £1,200

‘In the hush of early spring, when the frost still lingers at dawn but the air hums with the promise of warmth, Bramblekin emerges from the undergrowth.

His coat, woven with the blush of new blossoms and the green of unfurling leaves, marks him as a creature of the turning season. But those who glimpse him in the bracken whisper of something older - an ancient rite of renewal, etched into his very form.

Upon his back, half- hidden beneath the petals and ivy ,a pale sigil glows in the moonlight. Some say it is the mark of the earth itself, a sign left by the first thaw to call forth the new season.

Others insist it is a blessing from the spirits of the ferns, a gift for the guardian of Spring.

Whatever the truth, Bramblekin does not linger. He moves between the trees, scattering the petals with his footsteps, leaving behind only the scent of blossoms and the hush of something magical passing through.’

Story by Kelly Stevens - MacLaughlan.

Kirsty Bonning

‘Growing up as the daughter of an artist, the smell of turpentine and oil paint has been a constant presence in my life. I am so grateful to have lived in this creative environment and to learn how a subject can be portrayed, recreated and made into a beautiful piece of art work.

I work in oil or watercolour. Each of these mediums offers its own unique qualities and challenges. I adore the richness and texture of oil paint. I equally enjoy watercolour for its translucency and the way it surprises me with unique and interesting effects. I love to create depth in watercolour by painting many layers.

I have the privilege of living and working in a stunning part of Mid Devon. It is my passion and a constant source of inspiration for my landscape work. I am a mother and part time farmer with my husband, as well being an artist. A great deal of my work is individual commissioned pieces. I really enjoy working with my customers to bring their ideas to life.’

Lizzie Mee

After training at Falmouth and a short spell at Spike Island in Bristol, I have lived and worked in Devon. I’ve always responded to changing colours in sunlight and walk every day in my local area. I started printmaking about 20 years ago and now use the reduction method to create layered coloured prints with textures and some elements of monoprinting along the way.

For a long time, I have wanted to create a contemporary view of the countryside and make prints of places I know well. I enjoy going back and back to the same places, noticing changes and appreciating the seasonal rhythms of the countryside. I play with colour and patterns which I hope draws you in to the view. As do many artists I thrive on observing and love that prints can explore a view again and again.

I believe in looking as a meaningful, political, emotional act of agency where ideas and feelings can come together. I think of the countryside as an important part of our contemporary physical environment and something that can be savoured and discussed. I hope you can enjoy my journey into our rural landscape (as much as I enjoy making the prints).

Leo Davey

Winner of The Sunday Times Watercolour Competition 2019.

Leo studied at Falmouth College of Art in Cornwall. He now lives and works in his home town of Minehead in West Somerset where he has his studio/gallery.

Constantly inspired by his Exmoor and West Country surroundings, Leo's paintings change in style and feel as often as his subject. From the meticulous to the abstract, Leo refuses to settle on any particular genre of painting and continues to explore and develop ways of seeing and defining his landscapes through his works.

Leo has shown at the Royal West Academy, Royal Watercolour Society, and Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour. He has won The Evolver prize as well as numerous other prizes and been shortlisted in The Sunday Times Watercolour Competition in 2012,13,14 and 17 and won the competition's Smith and Williamson Cityscape prize in 2015.

We have a good stock of prints however can always order in various sizes if unavailable in the Gallery.

Liese Webley

Liese is an abstract painter living in Devon. Rich in layers and with an authentic surface each of her paintings has its own story to tell often inspired by the Devon landscpae and coast.

The process of creating work is very important to Liese with her starting point often the colours and shapes she sees around her. Initial sketches and photos are collected on location and taken back to the studio to use as starting points for her paintings. Shapes appear on the canvas as she starts to work on the first layers and colour is laid down. Liese works on as many pieces as she can fit in her studio at any one time, each piece informs the next.

Lily Faith

Lily Faith has grown and developed organically since, Lily graduating with a first in Surface Pattern Design from Swansea Metropolitan University in 2008. With a passion for colour and texture and a desire to embellish everything, her work explores different materials and outcomes.

“My love of colour and pattern is informed by my surroundings. Having grown up in and around Devon, natural form inspires my collections, I can never come home from a dog walk empty handed. But also travels afar have established a catalogue of sketchbooks that I later glean for information.”

Currently Lily Faith is exploring a series of wreaths and sculptures, all adorned with intricate hand painted and printed birds, these are a play on the drawn line, and the silhouettes in hedgerows, and how these can invoke quiet contemplation of the outside.

Louise Waugh

Louise Waugh is a painter and printmaker. Her still lives and landscapes have been exhibited throughout the UK and also in America, Spain, Italy and Ireland as well as showing regularly in the R.A. Summer Exhibition.

‘I have painted all my life and continue to do so and celebrate and enjoy the beauty I see in the world, from the landscapes in West Somerset to Bali, Morocco and wherever my travels take me as well as everyday objects and people in my life.

Creating art has always been core to my being, and from my early days when I studied etching in Granada, Spain, I have always taken the path of the artist that defines who I am. Largely self taught having trained as a teacher in Bath, I began exhibiting at 20 and my first exhibition was at the then Bristol Arts Centre where I exhibited large woodcuts and linocuts. My life continued as an artist choosing not to teach and I exhibited both here and abroad over the following years.

I now work in a rural studio in West Somerset painting primarily in oil and acrylic. My practice is to draw and sketch on location as well as painting, and I then return to my studio to bring another dreaming element from my imagination to the work.

The subject matter that interests me are the shapes and movement within a landscape, sometimes with a human element included. I am drawn to Cornwall and the sea, and wild places as well as a recent trip to Italy last summer.’

Louise Kelly

‘I am a Londoner and I graduated from the Royal College of Art in 1989 with a Masters degree in Illustration. After leaving the RCA I engaged in both editorial and advertising work with jobs that ranged from book covers and magazine work to packaging and advertising; having work published nationally and internationally.

I also had the pleasure and privilege of teaching in colleges and universities for over 30 years, a rewarding time seeing students develop new and exciting work.

I have now relocated to Devon where I have a studio and spend my time totally immersed in the most beautiful landscape with plein air painting. I feel my illustrative background gives my pictures a narrative slant. Painting is a necessity and I have a natural curiosity for creating pictures that evoke a sense of place, capturing moments in time.’

Lynsey Pickwell

Lynsey Pickwell lives in East Devon. The artist enjoys the practical process of creating unusual marks, textures and images using a range of printmaking techniques. Traditional lino cut relief printing, intaglio, etching and embossing are used.

Lynsey rarely goes anywhere without her doggy companion and muse who is a great inspiration for her work. ‘As any dog owner knows our animals are a constant source of amusement and fascination – the way they unconditionally love and find fun & comfort in the most mundane objects.’

Oil based quality printmaking inks are used on 100% acid free cotton rag paper to ensure the quality and longevity of all Lynsey’s original pieces.

Archival quality reproductions are also available.

Marina Morris

Marina has a BA Honours degree in Fine Art and History of Art from Goldsmiths College, University of London.

Then followed a career as a set decorator in the film industry.

Having moved from London to Devon 12 years ago, she has once again resumed her first love - painting.

Her abstract landscape work is an immediate and intuitive response to the forms and structure of the local Jurassic coastline beside the Devon hills and fields where land andwater meet, captured on walks with charcoal sketches, evolving to paintings in the studio. The same exploration of shapes and colour interacting with marks and texture plays in the still life paintings.

Mary Sumner

We are so delighted with the successful Exhibition and Book launch that was held in September 2023 for the artist Mary Sumner.

Lantic Gallery was Mary’s home gallery as she lived not far away in Westexe, Tiverton. As an artist and friend she holds a special place in our hearts after exhibiting her work for several years with sell out shows. We loved having her paintings on the walls once again, showing a collection of original paintings, lino prints and limited edition signed giclee prints as well as the very beautiful recently published book – ‘Mary Sumner’ The exhibition was a sell out , with queues out of the door and some customer’s waiting for six hours outside to secure their painting at the Private view with nearly 100 people attending - an amazing evening!

Mary agreed to the book which celebrates her life and work before her untimely passing in 2016. It is a tribute to her love of the countryside and the plants, flowers and creatures that live within it. For the reader a glimpse into her world of beautifully observed details, transformed by her gift of colour and composition and capturing so perfectly the essence of everyday life with uplifting spirit. We still have books available at the Gallery and a few original lino prints. From time to time we have an original painting in that we may be selling on, but this is vey rare.

Megan Players

The theme that runs through my life and therefore my work, is the marriage of our spiritual and physical realities. This line of questioning is very weighty stuff, however I know that it also child’s-play. Therefore, I try to approach my work with an openness that allows my subconscious, non-judgemental mind to operate.

I like the electric buzz of working from the model. Using an alchemical process involving ink, acrylic, emulsion, pastels, and sometimes fresco, I add and subtract to make expressive paintings which combine observation, memory, humour, culture, the history of art and a touch of autobiography.

Michelle Perry

Michelle has been woodturning for over 30 years from her workshop in Devon. Her main products are intricate pieces for table legs, stair spindles and newels as well as finials for curtain poles and staircases.

A couple of years ago she found a source of reclaimed Oak retrieved from Plymouth Docklands. The beautifully weathered wood inspired her to create a series of lamp bases. It displayed a beautiful pattern of cracking and colours as it had been submerged in seawater for years. Where the oak had come into contact with iron a chemical reaction had occurred leaving beautiful blue and black markings. Each base is completely unique and results can only be revealed when they are turned.

Please ask at the Gallery for available lampbases. Standard size - £295

She moved to West Cornwall in 2002 and made her home in a 200 year old converted Wesleyan Chapel. Nancy is now based in Buckfastleigh in Devon.

An all-round artist who cannot be categorised – painter, artist, jewellery maker, sculptor, ceramicist – Nancy finds the history and landscape of the region a great inspiration. Her sculptural jewellery is made by enamelling onto hand cut pieces of silver. Each piece is unique and she never makes two pieces the same.

We hold a large collection of Nancy’s jewellery, please visit or contact the Gallery for more details and avaliable items as all are completely unique.

Philip Turner 'Oriele Bronze'

We are a Devon based family run business, producing a range of quality sculpture of mainly British wildlife. Our range includes Hares, Otters, Birds and domestic animals and much more.

We employ the skills of selected local sculptors to create the original masters from which we then reproduce and hand finish beautiful cold cast bronze resin and hot cast solid bronze works of art.

The Gallery holds a good stock of bronze sculptures however we can always order in any that are not in stock. This is a sample of Philip’s work - we have a catalogue of further work in the Gallery.

Rachel Grant

Rachel Grant is an artist, illustrator and surface pattern designer based in 'The Potteries', the creative county of North Staffordshire in the UK.
'My artistic practice is grounded in the meditative process of painting, combining collage, acrylic and gouache to create textural, often detailed, compositions that are inspired by simple things and slow, quiet living. I am interested in our connections to home, heritage, seasons and the natural world, always seeking to capture an atmosphere of peace and harmony in everything I do; quiet, still moments in an otherwise chaotic world.'

Sara Parkins

Sara Parkins is a retired military veteran turned ceramist residing just outside Chevithorne in Mid Devon.

She taught herself to throw pots on the wheel in her home studio after attending pottery classes locally and falling in love with clay.

Sara throws a range of functional pieces from stoneware clay. Each piece is meticulously layered with multiple ‘brush-on’ glazes to achieve dynamic movement and colour reactions.

Every piece takes time to produce individually, ensuring that no two pieces are exactly alike. Colour ranges and sizes will always be sisters rather than twins.

Silverdarling Jewels

Emma Lumley is a contemporary jewellery designer trading as 'Silverdarling Jewels'. Originally from the UK she lived and worked in Queenstown and Wellington, New Zealand for 9 years. She now lives in West Somerset. Primarily trained as a silversmith, she was always more inclined towards the delicacy and intricacy of jewellery making.

Emma's work is described as gentle and feminine with an emphasis on delicate, organic and natural forms. She loves the beauty of simple, organic shapes.

"My work tends to create itself stemming more often than not from an already existing design and so the flow continues from one form to another. I liken it to a natural progression. From this perspective, my work is quite an intense reflection of my personality and character."

Emma’s work is widely distributed in a variety of acclaimed New Zealand stores and in the UK and Europe. She has created jewellery and body adornment for 'The Lord Of The Rings' trilogy and has been involved with the film industry for a number of years.

Emma has been interviewed for The Sunday Star Times, life and Review section(NZ), The Arts Programme on National Radio(NZ) and various British newspapers, as well as Tatler Magazine.

Tilly Young

Tilly has been making pots for almost 30 years, starting at art school and then working in Japan, following the footsteps of Bernard Leach. She discovered first hand the respect that the Japanese hold for craftwork made with expertise – ‘the material guides the maker’; and the glazed domestic earthenware she produces shows that these Japanese standards that she holds as her ideal have been reached.

This is an example of Tilly’s work, please contact the Gallery for items currently in stock.

Vanessa Cooper

Vanessa Cooper is a Dorset based Artist who studied at Portsmouth University and first exhibited her work in 1987.

Vanessa has built a strong reputation as a bold, imaginative artist with a deep love of colour, taking her inspiration from nature and family life. Her art is spontaneous, life-affirming, often quirky. Her glorious vases of flowers surrounded by fluttering birds are extremely charming. When she paints animals she captures their innocence, personality and spirit. Often categorised as a 'naïve' artist Vanessa works principally in oils as well as a variety of other mediums, redrawing her compositions over and over again to pare down the picture's content to its most basic elements.

‘I like to make people feel good when they look at my paintings. For me, it’s colour that does it every time, to make a painting resonate, you have to understand colour. Mine is very basic and I’m still learning. I was taught that colour is a language with its own psychology and vibrations and to observe the shades nature puts together when you are looking for inspiration. Nature is so powerful, it stills your centre and is very inspiring. Colour is very healing and energising’

‘I created this print as part of the ‘Fifty Bees’ project that seeks to raise awareness of the diversity and plight of British Bees. My print responds to the bee ‘Sphecodes marginatus’ or the margined blood bee. The snake relates to fennel, which in folklore was called ‘snake herb’ as snakes were believed to rub against it to sharpen their eyesight. Knapweed is also included, its genus name comes from the centaur Chiron who legend has it used the plants’ flowers as a poultice to heal the wound made by an arrow dipped in Hydra’s blood. In reference to this wonderful legend I also included the star V766 Centauri, one of the largest stars yet discovered, as well as many other plant species that Sphecodes marginatus frequents, each with its own fascinating histories, uses and legends.’

‘Look closely into a low-tide pool and the secrets of the sea will be revealed! This giant linocut print of a rockpool world is inspired by the wonder of rockpooling with my children. Here the intricate world of the rockpool acts as a window into the amazing diversity and beauty of the natural world- a world which we can sometimes forget to truly notice and connect to.’

Violet Astor

Violet Astor is a Devon based artist who taught herself how to draw during the years she was chronically ill with Lyme disease. Violet has travelled the world collaborating with governments and NGOs to celebrate wildlife as well as raise awareness and funds for endangered species. She also holds talks in schools and to the travel industry to promote the protection of the environment.

Violet uses natural and ethically sourced materials in all her work. She makes her own charcoal and paint as well as drawing on paper recycled from coffee cups. Her adventures have found her mixing soils from Arabian Leopard territory in Oman to learning ancient traditions of boiling roots and leaves to create dye from remote Papua New Guinean tribes. She is currently home based raising her young family and can be found foraging soil, clay and rocks around Devon to create authentic British wildlife pieces.

Mounted - £145 12/25 (Mounted size - 40cm x 52cm, image size - 29cm x 40cm )

‘This piece was created as the auction piece for my solo ‘Wild Oman’ Exhibition held in Muscat in 2019. The exhibition was a collaboration with Oman’s Ministry of Heritage & Culture and the Environment Society of Oman and sponsored by Land Rover. A silent auction was held on the opening night and 100% of the proceeds were donated to support the Environment Society of Oman’s Raptures Project.

The Leopard in the original artwork was 59cm from shoulder to paw, which would be the approximate size of a small adult female Arabian Leopard. It was created using soil collected from Leopard territory in Salalah, the south of Oman and gold leaf.’

‘Oman is said to have the highest population of Arabian Leopards. I went trekking to search for them; however, they are incredibly elusive so having not been able to see one firsthand, I used identifying markings from those caught in camera trap images to represent an authentic Arabian Leopard in my drawing.’

‘I watched this tiger attempt a kill with its mother, charging through the forest after a herd of chital deer. I could only hear the noise and flashes of colour. The hunt was brief and unsuccessful. Tigers are said to only succeed in about 5% to 10% of their attempts to make a kill, which is quite an amazing statistic when you see the power they exhort and the time needed to rest after.’

‘The original artwork was created using charcoal, gold leaf, soil and rocks collected from in and around Exmoor National Park. Rocks are crushed in a pestle and mortar and then sieved and ’cleaned’ in water. Once the pigment is dry, the process happens again one or two times to ensure that it is smooth and clean. It is then mixed with linseed oil and used as paint.’

'Arabian Oryx - Unicorn of the Desert' Original Charcoal on Grey Paper

Framed - £1,950 ( Framed size - 85cm x 64cm - Image size - 73cm x 53cm)

Violet writes: ‘The Arabian Oryx is Oman’s cultural symbol. They were nicknamed ‘Unicorn of the Desert’ due to their pristine white fur and horns which, seen from a certain side angle, appear to be a single horn. It is what is thought to have led to the myth of the unicorn.

The last wild Oryx was poached in the early 1970’s making the species officially extinct in Oman. But thanks to His late Majesty Sultan Qaboos, and a team of scientists, a project was set up to reintroduce  the Oryx back into the wild in its native desert. I had the privilege of meeting the project lead, Dr Mark Stanley Price, who shared his magnificent photographs from the time including the joy of the local Bedu tribe to see the beautiful Oryx back in their natural habitat.

In 2019, I was lucky enough to be invited to the Sultans palace in Muscat, in which there is a satellite breeding project. There I was able to study the Arabian Oryx up close in preparation for producing works for my 2019 ‘Wild Oman’ Exhibition, which was a collaboration with the Ministry of Heritage and Culture, & the Environment Society of Oman held in Muscat with the aim or raising awareness and funds for Omans endangered species.’

Mounted - £145 1/25 (Mounted size - 51cm x 40cm, image size - 41cm x 30cm )

Violet writes ‘In 2017, I spent a magical few hours with this adolescent tiger, whilst on a project with Sujan in Ranthambore National Park in India. I watched it practicing all its best moves on a butterfly; crouching low, creeping and pouncing. The scene was comical and heart breaking as the fearsome young tiger had not yet got the stealth or speed needed to make its kill. Luckily, it was still under the supervision of its mother who would provide food until fully grown and possessing all the skills to take down prey on its own.’

'Mountain Gorilla' Limited Edition Signed Giclee Print ( Taken from an Original Charcoal Drawing)

Framed - £395 - 14/50 (Framed size -59cm x 60cm, Image size - 40cm x 44cm)

Violet writes ‘This piece was my first ever detailed wildlife charcoal drawing. It was inspired by watching ‘Virunga’, a documentary about a group of brave people risking their lives to protect the last remaining mountain gorillas in Virunga National Park in the heart of war-ravaged Congo. At the time of watching the documentary, I was so ill with Lyme Disease that I was barely able to leave my attic room at the top of my sister’s house, so I started to draw to lose myself in something that I felt passionate about. And that is when this gorilla came to life. I lived with these eyes watching my every move for the many months it took me to complete it. And it turned out to be the beginning of an amazing journey with drawing and wildlife conservation’

Mounted - £145 SOLD 8/25 (Mounted size - 55cm x 45cm, image size - 41cm x 30cm )

‘This piece was my second ever charcoal drawing done when I was housebound with Lyme Disease. Unknowingly, it was the beginning of my artistic career, but at the time it was a true escapism when life was tough so I hold the memory of creating it very dearly. I was particularly interested in focusing on the intricate details of the elephant but wanted to make it large scale. I had time on my hands so I could delve deeply into each line, crease and wrinkle and be taken away, in my imagination, to a close encounter with an elephant on a small island on the Zambezi river on the eve of my 18th birthday.  This particular bull elephant was in musth and rampaged around the island for seven hours mock charging my sister and I several times and at one point trying to pull the roof off our hut while we were lying in our beds. I got to experience the size and power of this creature up close and will forever have ultimate respect for the species.’

‘Northern White Rhino is from a series of charcoal wildlife drawings. I use an intricate technique on a large scale focusing especially on my subject’s innate characters. Drawing here on the rhino’s strength and grace.

This piece was inspired on discovering that there are only three Northern White Rhinos left in the world. Calling on my desire to draw attention to a species that once roamed Africa in its thousands, which is now completely extinct in the wild.’

'Don't Palm me Off' - Original Charcoal on Paper - SOLD
'Don't Palm me Off' - Original Charcoal on Paper - SOLD

‘This charcoal drawing was a result of spending two magical hours with this wild female orangutan. I came across her while spending a few days aboard a riverboat in Tanjung Putting National Park. I had been invited to search for wild orangutans, probiscus monkeys and crocodiles along the river by the Green Team; a unique group of 33 reformed local loggers, who grew up in the area, and decided to turn their attention to protecting the rainforest rather than cutting it down. This particular orangutan had been rescued from a fire ravaged landscape that had been burnt to make way for palm oil plantations. She had been relocated and released into the wild in the national park where she now lives. I studied her face and all of the messages I believed she wanted us to hear. And she studied me back just as intently. Her movements were so humanlike that I could often see a resemblance of loved ones. It took everything I had not to reach out and try to take her away somewhere truly safe. This orangutans story is one very familiar to those living in Kalimantan. The threat of deforestation is a constant in Borneo, with only half of the original forest still left. The Green Team wanted to show me the reality of this by taking me deeper into the jungle, beyond the sightline of passing tourist boats, where I was met with the vast expanse of deforested wasteland. The Green Team have dedicated their lives to education and raising funds to buy and protect as much land along the river. A percentage of proceeds from the sale of this artwork will go to supporting the Green team in their work.’

Framed size - 72cm x 98cm. Image Size - 49cm x 73cm

‘The original artwork was created using charcoal and coloured with soil and rocks collected from Devon. While they were once a regular sight in Devon, turtle doves had practically disappeared as a breeding species due to habitat loss and changes in farming practices. In June 2025, around 50 European Turtle Doves were released at Rewilding Coombeshead as part of Reintroduction in Devon.’

‘This drawing was inspired by my time in JAWAI India, when I was lucky enough to see this beautiful leopard in the wild. The markings on this particular leopard identify a female affectionately named Nagini by the locals. Her story is one of survival under tremendous challenges. She was believed dead after her mother’s untimely demise when she was a young cub, however she was spotted many months later, healthy and hunting peahens in the area where she grew up. Her remarkable resilience has meant that she has grown into adulthood and now breeding in the area. Inside the piece, I have embedded amongst the Nagini’s spots the silhouette of a traditional Rabari herdsman with his distinctive turban to reflect the ancient and balanced relationship between man and leopard. This piece comes with thanks and appreciation to the incredible work of SUJÁN’s JAWAI, who offer responsible tourism within this magical landscape. They work tirelessly with the government to conserve and support the local community providing employment and adopting schools.’

‘Shortly before capturing this moment I came across this beautiful tigress stalking a large Sambar deer in Ranthambore National Park, India. They were deep into steep jungle terrain and I watched as she crouched low and moved stealthily, in complete silence, despite her huge form. There was a sudden burst of sound and movement as she lunged towards the deer and with an explosion of noise and flashes of orange as she darted through the trees. It was an incredible experience that had the adrenaline pumping and filled all the senses. Sadly she missed this time and she took herself off to a nearby pool to cool off. She eased herself in backwards, as tigers do, and started to drink with her tongue lapping up the water. Suddenly something caught her eye darting past her. Again there was a sudden roar of noise as she started pounding the water with her huge paws splayed and claws outstretched. I never thought I would see a tiger fishing, it was amazing! Unfortunately this attempt was also unsuccessful so she got out of the water and flicked her paws to shake off the water and continued her journey to find the next possible meal. Her body language, as she walked towards me, was that of composure in the face of adversity; ‘Sangfroid’. ‘

‘This was a special moment captured during an afternoon spent watching this tigress and her cubs meander through the jungle in Ranthambore National Park, Rajasthan, India . There was a purpose in their gait yet a casualness in their manner; their big paws padding along as they chuffed and panted. The mother lay down and one of her daughters walked over and lovingly rubbed her face against her mothers. It was such a promising sight; to see the next generation of healthy Bengal tigers being raised in the wild.’
